A fine Saturday was had for Southwold at the Brandeston Tournament.
The weather was perfect for heads up, passing rugby and Southwold demonstrated this to their opposition in abundance.
The first match against Wymondham was in the eyes of the coaches and the supportive parents (and opposition coaches and staff at Brandeston) “as good as it gets” from this bunch of talented and enthusiastic youngsters, a 6 to nothing try haul does not give the whole story, Southwold were quick to the breakdown in numbers and passed, passed and passed to overrun the opposition. The team showed Great Spirit, leadership and that the training on Sundays on the Common is taken in and put to practice.
Bury St Edmunds provided the opposition for the second match and Southwold continued in the same spirit as the Wymondham game, taking a two try to nothing lead by the half time break. The second half gave a sterner test, with Bury showing some superb skills and manoeuvres to get a try back. This provided a wakeup call, with great try line tackling to negate the Bury onslaught to find an equaliser; the team did not panic and eventually came our 4-2 winners.
Brandeston – the tournament hosts were the last play, the Brandeston Team hosting five regular Southwold players, shows the strength in depth Southwold has at U11’s. The game was played in the right way, with both sets of players showing respect for each other, Southwold knowing the dangers of their opposite numbers were again quicker to the breakdown and quick to the tackle, not allowing Brandeston room to “stretch their legs” and came out eventual 2-0 winners. A photo opportunity at the end between the Wold and Brandeston left parents with a smile and showed the friendship and respect between team mates on opposing sides for a day!
All three matches left the coaches and parents buzzing with pride and excitement for what should be an enjoyable Woodbridge Festival!
