A full squad of 12 players made the trip to the western fringes of Suffolk for a triangular fixture with Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket on Sunday 29th January. The crisp, clear weather on the east coast gave way to damp and foggy conditions inland, but this clearly did not affect anybody's determination to make the journey, even if one or two undertook a thorough recky of Bury and its various sights on the way to the club (sat navs have a lot to answer for, some of you might say)!
There were a couple of scores to settle here, with both opposition teams having beaten Southwold earlier in the season. A motivational team talk from coach Day set the mood, and all that remained was for the boys to get stuck in. The first game was against old adversaries Bury, and for the most part, it was played in the middle of the pitch with no side scoring in the first half. After the break, Southwold injected a greater sense of urgency into their play, perhaps realising this was the best way to keep warm, resulting in Renee going over for 2 tries. Bury replied with a good breakaway score, but on the day they couldn't quite match the visitors appetite for rucking!
Bring on Newmarket. Another solid team effort and an unfortunate Newmarket sin binning for an alleged high tackle, put Southwold in the ascendancy. For most of the game, the seagulls were dominant, with good solid forward play and some imaginative and determined running in the backs, particularly by Freddie who scored a well earned hat-trick of tries. Further tries were added by George and Charlie (2). Newmarket replied with their own version of Shane Williams, who wriggled through every challenge to score 3 excellent individual tries. Final score Newmarket 3 - 6 Southwold.
There's no doubt that this under 10s team is carrying on the long tradition of Southwold rugby by not over-exerting itself and saving its best for a purple patch somewhere in the middle of the game; they'll go far. Well done boys and thanks to everybody for turning up.
