The clear winner today was the weather. The so called "warm-up" had the opposite effect, so by the time the boys took the pitch they were cold and soaked to the skin. As were the loyal supporters.
Despite the short match, we showed total dominance on the pitch. We were barely outside their 22 for the 17 minutes the game lasted scoring more than a point a minute.
The pack were unstoppable winning all the scrums and all the rucks due to great support play. The backs managed a few runs and looked dangerous but it was a day for the forwards to tuck it up their jumper - which they did to great effect. Joe scored two from No.8 pick-ups and Jack FS and Evan both dived over for tries from close range. The wind was so strong that one of Ben F's conversions virtually blew back over his head!
The conspiracists are claiming that the ref was spotted having a word with his son after the third try. A few seconds later, at the other end of the pitch, the cross bar fell off. This lead to the premature end to the game - for heath and safety reasons. Good call Rob.
What was very noticeable was the team spirit. Despite the weather, the boys were up for the game and continued to smile and joke before, during and afterwards. Very encouraging.
THE CAKE STALL
The weather did benefit our fundraiser however. The clubhouse was packed with hungry, miserable and wet people. Cakes proved to be an ideal solution. Thanks to all the U15s bakers, we had an amazing spread and quantity of cakes, so much so that we raised an unbelievable £202 towards the French tour. Fantastic effort.
Special thanks must go to Granny FS, who is clearly a professional cake-maker, Karen Wallis who managed the stall and finally all the other mums and daughters who manned (womanned) the stall.
