FOUR tries apiece in a great match but Wymondham edge it!

A game with four tries to each side meant that Sunday saw yet another cracking U15 Sharks match against an impressive, well organised and very sporting Wymondham team.

Turning to the match itself, even if a case of so near yet so far, the U15 Sharks again showed great character, talent and determination against all the odds. Injuries and other county sporting commitments left the U15 Sharks short of players and some mistakes are obviously far too much fun for the U15 Sharks to only make the once! Terrific individual displays and a great team performance were punctuated by some bad old habits including giving their opponents a head start (in this case two converted tries by Wymondham), only starting to put a score on the board once the number of Sharks on the pitch had fallen below fifteen and conceding a try right at the tail end of the match.

Rory Lacey, at full back, led the fight back (from two converted Wymondham tries) with one of his own before having to leave the field due to injury. However, none of this Sharks squad roll over for any opponent and others soon picked up the baton with Callum Henderson and Fraser Warburton leading the way with their fantastic performances in totally unfamiliar positions. Sam Button showed that there is a great deal more to his game than pace by putting in an incredible defensive display whilst on the other wing Jack Strachan also provided marvellous defensive cover.

Amongst the forwards, Ollie Hills, Fraser and Dieter Horth got stuck into the task of giving the opposition forwards a real test whilst Taz Smith, Alex Hood, Callum and Sam Taylor covered every blade of grass tirelessly. Half time score, Southwold 5 v Wymondham 12. It was Alex who was to make the great tackle that led to that young man Daniel Hamilton-McGinty again taking matters into his own hands. Having found it difficult to run through a solid rugby post to score a try, Daniel followed up that collision by unleashing yet another bullocking run to get the reward he richly deserved for his performance - a great second half try.

Wymondham were strong, quick and full of fight though and it wasn't too long before they too scored a great opportunistic converted try by way of a reply. Once again though, the importance of having a squad of really able players was there for all to see. It was great to have Bobby Wickham back fit and he capped his return with an excellent try created by the pace and quick hands of Angus Kinsella, Conor Jones and Luke Hazzard. For their part, a great Wymondham defensive display helped restrict the attacks of the U15 backs who were denied that yard of space which, as we all know, is all the likes of Luke and Sam B need to score a try. All the U15 Sharks backs matched this defensive effort putting in tackle after tackle to similarly tie Wymondham up.

Ollie, Dieter, Fraser, Alex, Taz and Daniel weren't going to let this match get away from them and they put in yet another huge (and much needed) forwards performance throughout. Amongst the forwards, Sam Taylor was putting in one of those hugely impressive performances with which we are all getting familiar. He launched one blisteringly strong and powerful run after another before quick ball and a great pass from Angus started the move that led to his incredibly well deserved try.

Unfortunately, Wymondham had the talent, desire and other ideas and they sealed their win with a converted try of their own right at the end of the match. That made it four tries apiece with Wymondham's coversions delivering them the result. "It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired, you quit when the gorilla is tired" - take great pride in your performance U15 Sharks with lessons well learned.

Seb Anthony (Southwold's Director of Rugby) addressed the U15 Sharks after the match. Seb let them know just how much of a mark this team of outstanding young men have made this season. Whilst the club are obviously proud of their achievements, it is worth noting that these U15 Sharks are making an impression across the whole of East Anglia and the wider rugby community. What is really exciting though, is the potential of this team as everybody who has seen these U15 Sharks readily acknowledges! As Seb made clear, to realise that exciting potential, these U15 Sharks have to keep kicking on and raising their game. Encouraging words indeed.
