A good display from the squad in this 'trial match'.

BURY U15’s vs SOUTHWOLD U15’s

As Bury had no A team fixture this weekend and Southwold only had 2 subs, the decision was made to play 4 quarters of rugby in a ‘trial’ format. This would allow all of the Bury players to get some game time, and for Southwold to try some of the players in new positions.

Overall, the boys played well in various aspects of the game and scored some well worked tries along the way. The front row of Jens, Tim and Cairns battled hard against County players, and when Jacob B tried the prop position he showed great potential. New player Ellis joined the second row with Innes and both won good ball in the line, but more importantly carried the ball well and made their tackles. Jake T and Jacob B were as dependable as always, with both taking the ball forward and contributing to the drift defence (and although no stats for this game, well done Jacob B for the try!). At number 8, Alex played his solid game of driving forward the pack but making good breaks in open play. Sam C also played out of position for a quarter, making a guest appearance at second row and coped admirably. All in all the pack performed very well against a rotating squad of nearly 30 players. Slightly at times slow to the breakdown, but that will improve with real game time.

Callum at 9 (not his favoured position), distributed well and his quick vision for kicks gave the backs something to chase. The was no denying the Bury backs were quick into the faces of the Southwold backs, thus creating scrappy ball and never really giving the wings the chance to flourish. Connor at fly ran well and his trickery is always hard to defend against, but again his solid tackles will benefit the team when back to his favoured roll of full back. Centre partnership of Jacob E and Woody showed signs of breaking through the Bury defence and a nice off load from Jacob did not go un-noticed from the side line. Blondie Jacob showed some real pace when given the chance to run, and was not to be left wanting when called upon to tackle. New player Mark in his first game coped well and will develop more as more game time is played. Darius tried hard to break the defence and as usual is always a handful to put down, and continues to make good ground into the opposition territory. Sam C had a couple of good runs down the flank, and tackled well when the Bury players ran at him. Last but by no means least was Keiran who played a more than capable game at full back, reading the game and Bury attacks to ensure his defence was strong.

As a trial game, this was a good performance by all of the squad. Some silly errors from both teams but the ref was on hand to ensure the ball was allowed to flow as much as possible. The signs are good for the team this season, but remember that quick ball needs to be secured and used to allow the backs to use their pace. Well done lads.
