Southwold play solid game to beat local rivals.

LOWESTOFT & YARMOUTH U15’s 0 vs SOUTHWOLD U15’s 48

Southwold travelled to Gunton Park and due to available L&Y players, the sides were reduced to 12 aside for this fixture in order for the game to go ahead. With no flankers or full back, Ollie, Zak and and Hugo started on the bench.

From the high kick off, Wold chased well to shut down space for the L&Y players to attack. Jacob E then tackled well and created turn over ball. With some quick ball Woody attacked the right flank, supported well by Kieran. L&Y defended resolutely as the forwards attacked. Some strong running from Sam and Jens continued to ensure that Wold held positional advantage. From the attacking scrum Alex picked up from the base of the scrum and powered over to score his first try, converted by Chris. It wasn’t long before Wold scored their second try after quick hands through the backs found Darius on the wing, who sped over the line to touch down an unconverted try.

L&Y came back at Southwold with some strong forward running, with their number 8 looking to gain ground with quickly taken tap penalties. The Wold defence was solid as Cairns and Jacob B putting in some fine tackles. Chris was using the ball well and allowing Callum the time to plan the attacks. Some fine interplay down the left flank saw Innes with a sublime off load to Alex, who used his power to avoid the tacklers and score his second try in the corner. Ollie then entered the game and was soon disrupting play and securing possession for his team to use. Jacob E then found some space out wide after a good pass from Callum, and he timed his pass well to allow Kieran to attack. Kieran stepped in off his right foot at the right time and then sped through to score under the posts for another conversion for Chris. Darius then grabbed his second as some quick passes through the backs gave him time and space to speed over, which saw Chris’s conversion attempt just sail wide of the upright.

At half time, Wold players Ollie, Innes and Cairns offered to play for L&Y as their injuries mounted up. Hugo and Zak also came on to even the sides out again and Woody went to second row.

Wold took their time to get back to playing their running game in the second half, and with Ollie now playing for the opposition he was now disrupting the Wold game. There were some solid attacking runs from Sam and Jens, and some neat off loading from Alex and Zak. Jacob B made a fine run through the middle of the park and as the ball swept out wide, play was called back for a forward pass. Southwold then scored after a well executed kick by Callum. As the ball bounced up it seemed certain a L&Y player would secure but Darius used his speed and strength to take the ball and then arc his run to score his third.

L&Y battled hard but could not stop possession being lost to Wold at critical times as they attacked. Kieran then made a darting run inside only to be well ‘tap tackled’ by Ollie. Jacob E then scored a lovely try as he used his speed and dummy to ensure he had space to run into. Cairns supported well but Jacob went through to score under the posts to give Chris a straight forward conversion. The final score of the game came after more good work from the forwards and Jacob B scoring a deserved try after a man of the match performance, converted by Chris.

A good performance from the squad as they adapted to the 12 aside game and used the pace of the backs whenever they could. A solid showing from the forwards who dominated against a bigger set of forwards.

Thanks also to Jake and Conner for turning up although injured, to show support to the rest of the squad.

Man of Match : Jacob B
Iron Man : Woody
