Southwold U14’s v Ipswich

Southwold u14’s welcomed a large Ipswich squad to a sunny but windy Sunday morning on the common. Southwold boys were in good spirits after winning their last 3 matches against some good opposition. Feeling confident in taking on a strong and well drilled Ipswich side, they knew this would be a test for them. Southwold found themselves short of numbers due to late injuries but still managed to field 15 boys, with many stepping up and showing great sportsmanship to play in positions unfamiliar to them.
Southwold started the 1st half playing into the wind, struggling to take a foothold at the start of the game with Ipswich scoring with two converted tries in the first 5 minutes. Southwold boys regrouped and with the Southwold pack starting to dominate, earned themselves a great team try to bring the score midway through the first half to 5-14. Two late converted tries in the first half from two well worked set pieces from Ipswich gave them a 5-28 score line at half time.
The 2nd half was very much similar to the first with some great play and fierce tackles being made by both teams. With Ipswich having the luxury of making 5 changes whilst Southwold lost a player due to injury resulting in both sides having to play the remainder of the game with 14 a side. Southwold didn’t allow their heads to drop when the fresh legs and extra space started to work well for Ipswich and with some quality play from Ipswich that earned them 5-38 lead by the 2nd half midpoint. Southwold again dug in deep and with some great play, managed to get on the scoreboard in the 2nd half before Ipswich ran out eventual 10-50 winners.
