DISS 12 – 22 SOUTHWOLD

Match Report by David Vaughan

A wag at the pre match lunch speaking on behalf of Diss joked that Wold, who were above Diss in the league table, “ were not doing too bad for a village team ”
That comment however was to backfire badly as Wold stormed to a great first ever league win over their big brother local rivals and good friends Diss with what was simply a stunning all round performance in both attack and defence and perfect game management later in the game to ensure the points went back to the little village on the coast. No-one who watched the game could deny Wold had deserved their victory

Wold opened the scoring when they elected to kick for the corner following a penalty on fifteen minutes. Luke Wades pin point kick put them within five metres, and two Wold scrums followed the lineout and from the second Ollie Carlstroem at 9 crashed over on the blind side. Wade’s kick fell short from the touchline but Wold had their noses in front with a five point lead
Diss backs attacked often with speed but no real conviction and failed to penetrate the Wold defence despite coming close on two occasions
Seven minutes later however Wold were in again in almost the same spot as Chris Middleditch on the left wing powered over for Wold’s second with another attack up the left hand short side that had been instigated by the quick thinking Carlstroem. This time Wade’s kick was spot on and Wold lead 0 - 12 at half time

The game pattern continued in the second half with plenty of Diss attacking but no penetration as the Wold defence refused to budge and on fifty minutes Wold had a scrum 35 metres out in front of the Diss posts. They won good clean ball and the pack kept the ball and in short bursts drove for the line before Wold centre and skipper Cemil Duruk cut a great line at speed through the centre of the Diss defence to score under the posts and with Wade taking the easy extra two points Wold now lead by nineteen points without reply
Diss continued to press hard and ten minutes later had a lineout on Wold’s 22 meter line. Their forwards gathered the ball and drove Wold fully twenty five metres back for what was a great forwards try just to the right of the posts, making the score a more respectable 7 – 19 following the easy conversion
The home crowd were lifted and sensed a possible comeback but they were soon silenced with a Luke Wade penalty from 40m out with fifteen minutes left on the clock
The penalty meant Diss had to score at least three times and try as they might Wold kept them at bay until three minutes from time when Diss won good ball at a scrum and a great cross field kick was beautifully picked up by the Diss winger who went over unchallenged for a well planned and worked training ground try
The conversion from the touchline fell short and the game was done at 12 – 22 to the visitors.
It was a amazing to hear the Wold supporters and players alike singing on the pitch after the game
“ Oh when the Wold,
Go marching in,
Oh when the Wold go marching in………….. ”
but it was a fitting end to a great day for the Black and Gold “village” warriors and all their supporters.
No man of the match, but simply a great team performance
Wold by winning also held on to their second spot in the league table before the home clash with Holt next Saturday on the Common
