Southwold U7s at the Bury Rugby Festival
Sunday 19th October 2014
The day of the Bury rugby festival started early, dark and rainy. By the time the players had arrived and warmed-up however the weather had improved and the games started in warm, autumn sunshine.
Southwold started strongly with a convincing win against Bury. They followed this success with two hard fought draws against Ipswich YM and Diss. The team finished their final pool game with a great performance resulting in a win against Newmarket. This run of good form earned Southwold a place in the Trophy final.
After nervously watching the plate final between Ipswich RFC and Ipswich YM it was Southwolds turn to take to the pitch against Bury Gold. The first half of the final didn’t go Southwolds way and they finished at the break 4-0 down. After a couple of strategic substitutions Southwold started the second half with new vigour and had soon scored thanks to a great run by Joey. Bury quickly replied with a try of their own which was swiftly cancelled-out by a fantastic team try scored by Boo. Bury rallied again however and managed to increase their lead as the second half progressed. In the final minute of the game Southwold dug deep and pushed forward only to have tries by Harvey and Sam disallowed. The final whistle signalled the end of Southwolds trophy hopes with a final score of 8-2.
Southwold should be very proud of their performance at the festival. There was a real team spirit amongst the players and some great examples of individual skills. Bring on the next festival.
