Southwold Shine in High-Scoring Derby Encounter

Southwold Shine in High-Scoring Derby Encounter

Jim Keeble16 Aug - 19:18

Southwold 92 - 12 Lowestoft and Yarmouth

Southwold produced a scintillating display of attacking rugby to overpower Lowestoft & Yarmouth 92–12, underlining once again why they are regarded as the dominant force on the East Coast.

From the opening whistle, Southwold set the tone with relentless pace and precision. Early tries from Simpson in the right corner and Kenny on the opposite flank gave them a quick 10–0 advantage, before Luke Wade added the extras to extend the lead.

Lowestoft & Yarmouth briefly rallied with a well-worked score in the corner, but it only stirred the home side into action. Saunders, Kenny, and Simpson all crossed as Southwold’s forwards provided a powerful platform and the backs struck with ruthless efficiency. A sweeping move saw Matt Rodwell finish superbly down the wing, and a trademark pick-up from the base of the scrum by Aitken kept the scoreboard ticking. By half time, Southwold had stormed clear at 54–5.

The second half brought no respite for the visitors. Kenny continued his clinical form, completing his hat-trick after a sharp inside pass from Baron, before later adding a fourth as Southwold’s handling tore holes in the defence. Aitken and Saunders combined for a length-of-the-field effort, with Saunders racing 80 metres to score. Tries from Payne and a second for Rodwell capped a near-perfect attacking performance.

Lowestoft & Yarmouth did manage a consolation through their right wing after some determined running, but by then the contest was long settled.

In total, Southwold ran in 14 tries, with Wade and Simpson reliable from the tee, to secure a remarkable 92–12 victory.

With such a commanding performance, Southwold not only extended their dominance over their local rivals but also reaffirmed their standing as the team to beat on the East Coast.
