Match report for Norwich away

A fine morning away in Norwich greeted the U16’s for their first match of the season against a team with a good reputation for rugby. With planes flying overhead the lads (and coaches) were hoping that all the practice and training that had taken place so far would land for the team. Within fifteen minutes of the start the majority of spectators were getting an indication of the direction of travel, with Southwold having scored four tries through some great passing and running with the ball as well as some ferocious tackling and rucking at the breakdown. Southwold, by this time, were worth their lead. With changes taking place on the quarter, Norwich presented a stronger test leading up to, and after, half time with some great work at the scrum and almost making their mauling count. Fortunately, for Southwold, Norwich were unable to convert these positions to points, and once again Southwold through their resolute defending and flowing attacking play, were able to add an extra three tries (converting all but one) by half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern with a spirited performance from Norwich but with some determined and stout defending from Southwold, Norwich were not able to put points on the board. Some superb passing, running and attacking combination play along with some testing of skills with cross field kicking continued to tick the score board over. The full time whistle went, with Southwold running out worthy winners.
Southwold dominated all phases and with the smart line speed and stubborn defending never let Norwich in the game. There was great link and support play from all players and some of the rugby on display from the lads sets a high bar for future games drawing compliments from the opposing teams coaches on the style of rugby played. Norwich were generous hosts and never stopped competing for a second, which should stand them in good stead for the rest of the season. Special mentions go to debutant Joe (running in four tries) on his debut, Alfie for a well worked try and to the U15’s playing with and supporting the U16 ‘s. Still lots to work on for all, but what a start to the season. Arn the Wold!
