On a bright Sunday morning, Beccles U16’s came to the common for a friendly 15 a side game to start the season properly. A lot of the boys know each other from school and this adds to the rivalry between the teams, Beccles had the best of the first half and Wold had to defend against wave after wave of strong attacks before Sam broke away and made a terrific run through the Beccles defence to score the first try of the match which Jesse converted. Beccles scored almost straight away between the posts and at halftime it was 7-7.
The second half was different though, the Wold scrum started to work better and the Beccles pressure seemed to be easier to control and Wold scored four more tries without reply, two by Lamps and one each by Callum and another for Sam. Jesse scored a further three conversions. Despite Beccles constantly pushing the defence, Wold took there chances and the final score was 33-7. All of the boys played there part and they showed again a fantastic team spirit and ignoring what was to be a strange end to the match. With just a few minutes to go the Beccles coaches pulled the team off the pitch and refused to go on, blaming the ref and his decisions, the disputed decisions are not why they lost! The Beccles boys relunctantly left as instructed and initially headed for the changing rooms with out shaking hands, however common sense prevailed and the boys came back to shake the Wold players hands, all was friendly again as the boys changed and enjoyed there post match meal. Nathan was the coaches mom and Joe was chosen by Beccles as their Southwold mom.
