Southwold U16`s come through two tough matches to win the Suffolk RFU plate competition

On a bright but breezy Sunday, Wold welcomed Harwich and Bury St Edmunds B to the common for a three way final play off, the format was each team to play 2 35 minutes games to decide the winner. The Wold team was in good spirits and I am confident that the parents and friends were more nervous than the players.

The first game was Harwich v Bury, there seemed to be a bit of a edge to the game as Bury won

Wold`s first game was against Harwich, a strong looking team but Wold were ready and quickly went into a 27 point lead, tries from firstly Arthur, then Lamps, quickly followed by Raife and 2 for Callum, Jesse converting 1. The team showed some great play to create their scores and defend anything Harwich tried, half time saw a few changes in the team and Harwich started better scoring two tries before Lamps scored his second and the win was secured. The team played well and the game was played in a great spirit and the Harwich boys were gracious in defeat. The final score was 32-14. The game saw the first yellow card for a Wold player in over three years as Arthur left the field for consistent offside offences by the team as Harwich manged to exert a bit of pressure towards the latter part of the game.

So the last game was the decider, the last time we played Bury was at U13, they won easily but this a very different team. Bury started quickly as one of there team ran through to score, the conversion was good and they led 7-0, Wold responded with 3 tries without reply Raife, and two more for Callum and Jesse converting 2 the score was 19-7, Wold looked to be a strong position as the second half went on but this is a good Bury side and after losing a prop and the game changing to uncontested scrums, they came back strong, George was rightly yellow carded for two high tackles and Bury increased the pressure as the prop returned and scrums became contested again. The game had changed and Wold were suddenly defending constantly close to there line and then after a number of infringements by Wold, Nathan was also yellow carded and Wold only had 13 on the pitch, the pressure told and Bury scored a try which was converted, 19-14 and the ref indicated 2 minutes left. Wold managed to get the ball close to the Bury line and after strong play by the Wold pack, a Bury player was pushed out of touch and the ref ended the game and Wold were the winners.

Credit to Bury they showed a lot of skill and determination. As did Harwich and both of the visitors were worthy of there place in the final.

So the end of the season, the end of this team but a great way to finish as Suffolk RFU U16 plate champions
