National Cup – First Round

Southwold 1st XV got their National Cup campaign off to a flying start on Saturday, producing an excellent all-round performance to secure a 50–5 victory over local rivals Stowmarket at the Common.

From the outset Wold’s intent was clear. A dominant scrum set the platform for quick ball, and some slick interplay out wide created space for Theo Kenny to cross for the opening try. Moments later, Mike Barron showed his pace down the wing, recycling quickly before gathering again to finish in the corner, extending the lead to 14–0.

Southwold’s defence soon turned to attack as a turnover in their own 22 allowed Kenny to race the length of the field for his second. More phases followed, with Luke Wade taking the ball to the line and offloading to Charles Buckley, who powered through a tackle to score near the posts. From the restart, Guy Blades surged clear before offloading to Dukes, who finished brilliantly in the corner to make it 29–0 at half time.

The second half brought more of the same. Another turnover led to Nick Saunders darting through to score under the posts, before Will Ridge finished a flowing move out wide after solid scrum ball. Stowmarket showed spirit and earned a deserved try after sustained pressure near the posts, but Wold had the final say. A turnover on the wing saw Kenny hand off his opposite number in trademark fashion before releasing Blades, who crossed under the posts to complete the scoring at 50–5.

This was a performance built on discipline, teamwork, and relentless attacking ambition—every player contributing to a display that reflected the very best of Southwold rugby. Credit to Stowmarket for their resilience and for playing their part in an entertaining cup tie.

Southwold march on to the next round with confidence, proud of a strong start to their cup journey.
