Suffolk Gold Cup Final Match Report: Stowmarket 33 – 34 Southwold

Southwold Rugby Club retained the Suffolk Gold Cup for the third consecutive season after edging out Stowmarket 34–33 in a dramatic and unforgettable final at Stowmarket RFC.

In a thrilling contest that swung one way and then the other throughout, Wold showed composure, resilience and belief to snatch victory in the closing moments and cap another memorable day for the club.

Southwold started brightly and opened the scoring with an excellent backs move that created space for fullback Mike Barron to finish in the right corner for a 5–0 lead.

Stowmarket responded strongly. After a series of powerful forward drives, their fly-half jinked through under the posts to put the hosts ahead at 7–5.

The final quickly developed into an end-to-end contest. Wold regained the lead when top try scorer Tom Keeble beat his defender on the outside following a long pass from Luke Wade to make it 10–7.

Southwold then extended their advantage through a moment of sharp awareness from Charles Buckley, who gathered a loose ball from halfway and raced away to score before adding the conversion himself to give Wold a 17–7 lead.

Stowmarket fought back once again before half-time, their powerful No.8 breaking from a wheeling five-metre scrum to score and reduce the deficit to 17–14 at the break.

Southwold began the second half strongly. Guy Blades intercepted brilliantly on halfway and, showing great awareness, selflessly offloaded to Theo Kenny who finished superbly. Wade added the conversion to push Wold ahead 24–14.

The momentum shifted again when Southwold failed to clear their lines and, after sustained pressure through scrums and lineouts, Stowmarket crossed in the corner to close the gap to 24–19.

Wold answered immediately. Strong forward play took Southwold close to the line before Keeble hit a superb line to score his second try of the afternoon, extending the lead to 29–19.

But Stowmarket refused to go away and set up a dramatic finish. A powerful burst from one of their loose forwards brought them back to 29–26, before another converted score following a missed tackle put the hosts ahead 33–29 with only minutes remaining.

With the cup seemingly slipping away, Southwold produced one final attack. Theo Kenny showed electric pace down the left wing and was stopped just short of the line, forcing Stowmarket into conceding a penalty.

From the resulting quick play, Charles Buckley spotted a mismatch in defence and darted over for the decisive score.

The drama was not finished there. From the restart Stowmarket were awarded a penalty on halfway and launched one final assault on the Southwold line. Wold were forced to withstand a series of frantic attacks in the closing moments, defending with huge determination before eventually forcing the Stowmarket centre into touch to bring the match to an end and secure a remarkable 34–33 victory.

Following the final whistle, the Suffolk Gold Cup was presented to Southwold captain for the day Charles Buckley by Suffolk RFU President Steve Arundell, as Wold celebrated winning the trophy for the third consecutive season in front of players, supporters and travelling club members alike.

Credit to Stowmarket for contributing to a superb final played in outstanding spirit and intensity throughout.

A remarkable occasion and another proud chapter for Southwold Rugby Club.

Arn the Wold!
