Match Report: Southwold 51 – 14 Ipswich
Southwold returned to winning ways in style on The Common this weekend, producing a powerful and composed display to secure an impressive 51–14 league victory over Ipswich. With several changes to the side, Charlie Buckley stepped confidently into the No.10 shirt and delivered a match-defining performance, guiding the team superbly in challenging moments and unleashing the backs with precision.
Wold set the tone early through scrum dominance, giving a platform that Ipswich struggled to contain all afternoon. A clever kick through from Theo Kenny created the first opening, gathered by Tom Keeble who finished smartly in the corner for 5–0.
A quick free-kick from a lineout saw Kenny break the line before linking with Gav Starks, who powered over to extend the lead to 10–0. Southwold’s confidence grew, and a well-worked lineout move put Jonny Utting cutting straight through the midfield to score near the posts for 15–0.
The pack then took complete control. A massive shove drove Ipswich back over their own line, and No.8 Jeremy Aitken controlled the ball expertly at the base to touch down for 22–0.
Ipswich responded with determination and earned a deserved try through close-range phases, reducing the deficit to 22–7, but Wold hit back immediately. Another dominant scrum delivered clean ball for Buckley, who spotted a gap and raced through to score his first of the afternoon, making it 27–7.
Sustained pressure from a series of phases then opened space near the posts, with Smith on hand to finish strongly and push the lead to 34–7 at halftime.
Southwold started the second half as they ended the first—on the front foot. More scrum dominance gave Utting a perfect platform to burst through again, scoring under the posts for 41–7.
Captain Block then produced a trademark break, offloading to Starks who returned the favour outside to Keeble, the winger diving in at the corner for 46–7 in one of the moves of the match.
The forwards continued to assert their authority, and it was Guy Blades who capitalised this time—breaking the line after yet another powerful scrum to score and take Southwold beyond 50 points.
Ipswich kept competing to the end and were rewarded with a try from a well-placed kick through, closing the game at 51–14.
It was a strong all-round team performance from Southwold, built on set-piece control, sharp work in open play, and an excellent showing from Buckley in the No.10 shirt. A positive afternoon on The Common, and a welcome return to form as the league campaign continues.
