Match Report: Ipswich YM 12 – 46 Southwold
Southwold extended their winning run to eight games with an impressive 46–12 away victory over Ipswich YM in their penultimate league fixture of the season. After a shaky start, Wold showed great composure to take control of the game and run out convincing winners, setting up a strong finish to the campaign with Saffron Walden visiting The Common this weekend.
The hosts started brightly and capitalised on early pressure when Southwold failed to deal cleanly with the opening kick-off. A series of penalties and quick tap-and-go phases saw Ipswich YM cross for an early 5–0 lead.
Southwold responded well. When Ipswich YM missed touch with a penalty, Ed Fuller countered effectively, linking with Josh Block who finished the move to level the scores at 5–5. Ipswich YM struck again shortly after with another quick tap and break through the defence to regain the lead at 12–5.
Wold stayed patient and began to build momentum. Sustained phases inside the 22 created space for Harvey Fuller to break close to the line, with Adam Smith on hand to pick up and score, narrowing the gap to 12–10 at half-time.
The second half saw a transformed Southwold performance. From the restart, Jonny Utting made a strong break into the 22, with Captain Sherard Block in support to score under the posts and give Wold the lead for the first time at 17–12.
Southwold’s confidence grew, and further pressure from a lineout led to another break from Block, setting up Dr Desmond Brett to cross for his first try of the season — a moment well celebrated by teammates and supporters alike.
A turnover deep inside the Southwold 22 then sparked a clinical counter-attack, with Guy Blades slicing through to extend the lead to 27–12. Moments later, Charles Buckley broke through midfield before linking with Nick Saunders, who finished well to push the score to 32–12.
With Saunders now directing play from scrum-half, Wold continued to find space. A sharp break set up Callum Hurn to finish in the corner, before the forwards capped a dominant second-half display with a powerful scrum drive that saw Gavin Starks pick up at No.8 and score, sealing the 46–12 victory.
A strong response after a slow start, with Southwold’s fitness, depth and attacking quality shining through in the second half. The squad now looks ahead to their final league fixture at home, carrying momentum and confidence into the weekend.
Arn the Wold!
