Southwold RFC 0–10 Saffron Walden
Wold battle hard against league leaders in testing conditions
Southwold were edged out 10–0 by league leaders Saffron Walden on The Common in a closely fought encounter played in windy and wet conditions.
Walden began with a strong breeze at their backs, and an error from the kick-off immediately put Southwold under pressure in their own half. The Wold responded with a tremendous defensive effort, holding out against the elements and restricting the visitors to just one first-half try. That score came after a misplaced pass and an awkward bounce of the ball allowed Walden’s right wing to gather and finish in the corner.
Southwold gradually worked their way upfield and came agonisingly close to getting on the scoreboard. The Wold crossed the line on three separate occasions, but each time the referee was unsighted and the try was not awarded, leaving the home side frustrated but very much in the contest.
At half-time, the score stood at 0–5, with everything still to play for.
Unfortunately, the strong breeze dropped away to nothing in the second half, removing the advantage Southwold might have hoped to enjoy. Despite complete dominance in the scrum, the Wold struggled to build sustained phases of play and put the visitors under prolonged pressure. Walden’s excellent defensive lineout proved a major obstacle, repeatedly disrupting Southwold’s attempts to gain momentum.
Southwold’s injury troubles continued, too, with full-back Mike Baron dislocating his shoulder — another blow in what has been a challenging spell for the squad.
However, the Wold continued to defend with real determination and commitment. Walden eventually added a second try following a series of powerful drives, but Southwold’s defensive resolve ensured the league leaders were restricted to just 10 points in a hard-fought contest.
While the result was disappointing, the Wold can take pride in a strong defensive performance against the side currently setting the pace in the league. There is little time to dwell on it, with another tough test awaiting next week.
**Next up: Southwold travel to Norwich for a 3pm kick-off next Saturday.**
