Basildon who were already doomed to relegation prior to this game, brought a great deal of pride, courage and fighting spirit with them to Southwold Common but by the end of the match they had simply been overpowered and overwhelmed by a Wold side who knew how important a bonus point win was to them, in their quest to remain in London 2 North East by avoiding relegation themselves
For the first quarter of the game Basildon gave nothing away and themselves looked dangerous with ball in hand on the break. Luke Wade at 10 had other ideas however and stepped inside two tackles before diving over for a fine individual try to the right of the posts but his conversion attempt was foiled by the strong wind
Wold were in again ten minutes later when they kicked to the corner from a penalty, won great lineout ball gathered the ball in and drove Basildon back over their own line for Gavin Starks to gleefully touch down. This time Wade slotted the conversion from wide on the left and Wold were twelve points to the good
Basildon defended well and pressured Wold just before the break, Ollie Carlstroem was yellow carded for a high tackle and from the resulting penalty the visitors got three points back to make it 12 - 3 at the half time whistle
The second half started with two Wold penalties in under ten minutes, both for high tackles and both slotted from distance by Luke Wade increasing the gap by six points to 18 - 3
From the second restart Wold broke at pace down the left wing and Cemil Duruk offloaded well to Ollie Carlstroem now back on the pitch from his time in the sin bin and no-one was going to stop him scoring Wold's first try of the second half and Wade was good for the two extra points from wide on the left
On 55 minutes Wold won good scrum ball and Jamie Jenner picked up at No 8 and started a great handing move by half the Wold team ending with Darius Mullen running in under the posts for one of the tries of the season and Wade easily slotted the conversion to bring the score up to 32 - 3 in favour of the home team
Basildon then got a well deserved try of their own keeping the ball tight in their forwards for several phases before driving over the Wold line wide out on the left and the conversion was tremendous from wide against the strong wind bringing the score back to 32 - 10
The next try got the biggest cheer of the day from the crowd as Des Brett, better known for his scrummaging talents than his pace, rolled back the years and sprinted over from fully 25 metres out. His beaming bearded face and the cheers from the crowd said it all but Wades conversion attempt from wide left came back off the right hand post.
With five minutes left on the referees watch Wold had a lineout on the left hand touchline just on Basildon's 22 metre line. The ball was won and fizzed out down the line through the backs for Guy Blades to score on the right wing just inside the corner flag, and Luke Wade slotted the two points right from the touchline and it was 42 - 10 to Wold with less then three minutes left
It looked like that would be that but Dean Basson had other ideas in the back row and he broke several tackles before the ball reached Luke Wade who ran in for his second try of the day which of course he duly converted himself
At the whistle the 49 - 10 score line was deserved but credit to Basildon who had fought to the end but with only one substitute travelling with them had simply run out of gas during the second period
It was a strong Wold performance which will need to be repeated with
three tough games coming up next, away to Harlow, then away to Cantabs with a home game to follow against Ipswich. All four teams are still battling to gain the points required to stay in the league and none of them are safe yet.
March is going to be an anxious and hopefully exciting month for the Wold faithful, so fingers crossed the results go in favour of the Black and Golds
