Gritty 27-19 win over a strong and determined team

West Norfolk who were 3rd in the table arrived on The Common on a perfect rugby day with a large squad looking confident and well drilled. Indeed for the first 20 minutes we were pinned in our half but our defence stood firm. Both scrums were equally matched and shared the spoils throughout the game. Strong carries from both teams were countered well and it took a textbook run out to the backs to put Poppy in the corner to break the deadlock. WN came back straight away with two tries converting one. We were looking a little vulnerable when a long (ill-advised) clearance kick from NW deep in to our half was picked up by the inimitable Hollie who ran virtually the length of the pitch avoiding and breaking tackles to score the first of her 4 tries!

With the score virtually even at half time, WN started the second half well and were looking dangerous but our line-speed stopped them from breaking the through despite several powerful runs from a decent centre pairing. Our forwards then managed to make some strong carries penetrating their defences and tying up their tacklers which gave our half backs the opportunity to spin it out. Another 3 tries from Hollie later, including one of the best our backline has scored, looked to seal the win. So much so that NW were visibly frustrated and after various melees the ref stepped-in and had words with both captains. Enough said!

WN ran in a consolation try in the closing minutes of the game as we tired with no replacements.

Southwold's unexpected win will boost their confidence for the second half of the season.
