The Women of the Wold kept their momentum rolling on a bright Sunday afternoon, continuing their winning ways on the Common in front of a fantastic home crowd. With a match day lunch bringing families, friends, and supporters together, the touchline was full and lively — a wonderful reflection of our community.
Clashes between Southwold and Diss are always full of heart and commitment, and with both sides starting the 2025/26 season strongly, we knew we were in for a spirited contest. Fresh off the back of having to give an unfortunate walkover to Bishops Stortford, the Women of the Wold were hoping for a positive game. The opening stages didn’t disappoint.
Southwold’s attack found its rhythm early, with Charlotte (available to sponsor) lighting up the first half with a superb hat-trick. Maisie (available to sponsor) added the extras with a well-struck conversion, giving the Wold a confident platform to build from. Much of that early dominance came from the forwards, who put in a huge shift at scrum time, working tirelessly to earn the go-forward ball that allowed the backs to unleash the footwork they’ve been honing at training.
Diss, as ever, showed real determination and struck back before the break. A well-earned try and a sustained spell of pressure — helped by a series of penalties — had Southwold defending hard on their own line. It was a reminder of the quality and resolve Diss always bring to these fixtures.
The visitors came out after half-time with renewed energy, asking serious questions of the Wold defence. For a lengthy period, Southwold were pinned inside their own twenty-two, and it took calm leadership from Emma (sponsored by PVS Plumbing) at fly-half to knit the forwards and backs together at vital moments. A couple of crucial turnovers relieved the pressure and allowed Southwold to re-establish their shape.
With the momentum shifting, Elyse (sponsored by Road Runners Taxi) crossed twice in the second half to give Southwold some valuable breathing room. Even then, Diss refused to fade — coming agonisingly close to narrowing the gap before a knock-on over the line denied them.
In the end, it became a test of composure and collective spirit. The Women of the Wold held firm, kept their energy high, and closed out a hard-earned win against determined opposition. With fresh faces making their debut in black and gold on the Common, it was a great afternoon of spirited rugby.
Final score: Southwold Women 27 – Diss Vixens 15
It wasn’t the tidiest performance, but it was full of character — and there’s plenty to build on as we take a short break before heading to Lakenham on 15 December.
Forward of the Match: Josie (sponsored by Bespoke Scaffolding) – for showing great leadership to the forwards making their debuts, and for the hard graft getting stuck into as many breakdowns as possible.
Back of the Match: Emma (sponsored by PVS Plumbing) – for her cool, calm head and leadership qualities at fly-half which helped us to secure the win.
