First league game of the season, Southwold welcomed newcomers to league Wymondham Wasps to sunny Southwold.
The visitors started aggressively driving into the home 22 only to get penalised twice. The Swallows sensed an opportunity and their forwards drove hard over halfway, denied Wymondham’s backs sustained possession and pinned them back for the first quarter. First try came from newcomer Libby Whiting who ran through the defence and scored a try. Shortly after some fantastic support play from Caroline Swanston also scored. Wymondham were clearly shaken and retaliated with well drilled phases in the Southwold half. Tremendous defence, kicking to clear and follow-up tackling enabled Southwold to hold off the continued assault and lead into half time.
Second half, Southwold defended well in their own 22 for prolonged periods but still looked the more dangerous, launching attacks from deep. Wymondham backs still unable to break the strong Southwold defence. Eventually, against the run of play, Libby Whiting dogged determination paid off and she ran through a confused defence to score again.
