Norwich U13s 0 – 43 Southwold U13s

Norwich U13s 0 – 43 Southwold U13s

Southwold U13s took the road north to the fine city of Norwich and came away with a good win against an improving Norwich team.

Match captain Eddie won the toss and elected to go with the wind in the first half though no one seemed to have informed the Norwich team of the prevailing blustery conditions as they pinned Southwold in their own 22 for the first ten minutes. Southwold had plenty of possession but strong Norwich tackling and some unforced errors kept Southwold at the wrong end of the large pitch. Finally a penalty infringement by the home team allowed fly half Kyle to use his boot to great effect and move play into the Norwich half. A huge carrying drive up field by Josh enabled the half backs to provide quick ball for Max who manged to break through at least four defensive tackles before touching down between the sticks. The Southwold forwards were really gaining ascendency at the scrums and Bruno was turning in another superb performance in loose play and at the lineout. However to their credit the Norwich forwards managed to generate a very strong rolling maul on the Southwold 22 which was driven all the way to the line but was then held up. Another huge clearance kick from Kyle led to the second Wold try with Max fielding the returned kick on the half way line and then sprinting in with a hitch kick to beat the last man and again dot down under the posts. Harry converted the kick for a 12 point Wold lead at halftime.

Strong tackling work in the backrow from Teal’k and forceful driving from Noah set up the third try with Riley powering through to score. Southwold were turning the screw now and denying Norwich the possession that they had enjoyed earlier in the game. Anton was able to capitalise on further strong drives from the forwards to score a hard fought try. Another good break from Max on the Norwich 22 completed his hat-trick of tries and he converted the kick himself to make it 0-29. The Southwold forwards were now enjoying some great drives with quick support and distribution from Eddie keeping the momentum up. Jamie C was in close support and benefitted from a lovely pop pass when Riley was tackled just feet from the line with Max again adding the conversion to make it 0-36. Riley scored the final try himself with a drive over from the pack allowing him to come up smiling. Max added the final conversion to make the final score 0-43.

This was a really impressive return to form for Southwold with contributions from the whole 21 man squad. Josh was voted forward of the game and Max with a fantastic display of running rugby was voted Man of the Match. There was some really exciting rugby played by Southwold today in the style we aspire to play and it bodes well for the future. Our hosts Norwich should take credit for a considerable improvement in their standard of play over the last two seasons and the score line did not reflect their contribution to a fine fixture. We look forward to welcoming them to The Common in February.
