Southwold U13s 15 – Bury St. Edmunds 5

Despite having fifteen players plus one replacement, many of Southwold’s three quarters ended up playing out of position. Burry won the toss, and opted to kick to Southwold. Initially the visitors seemed to be pinned down in their own 22, but they resisted the pressure, eventually managing to break out and turn the tables on Bury. The next ten minutes were played in Bury’s half. Southwold made a number of good straight penetrating runs, and at first the home team soaked up the pressure. Eventually possession and a more expansive game was rewarded with a centres try from Harry Forward-Friend. At half time the score was 5-0 to the visitors. Southwold came out in the second half determined to keep up the pressure. Despite conceding many scrums, Southwold enjoyed the majority of the possession and territorial advantage. Early in the second half scrum half Sam Garrington made a jinking run and forced his way over the line. Rees Jordan made what looked like an unstoppable run down the left and scored under the posts. At this point Southwold looked like they might well keep a clean sheet. However, Bury never gave up and made a sustained attack in the last five minutes of the game, resulting in a well deserved forwards try. The final score was 15-5 to Southwold. No tries were converted on either side. A special mention should go to the Southwold pack who dominated the scrums and line outs, taking most of the oppositions ball. Next week Southwold U13s face Ipswich away. If Southwold can put out a full squad, spectators may be in for an interesting game, which will be the last of the season for Southwold.
