The Colts travelled to Sudbury for a 3-way against Sudbury and Shelford in the Colts Conference League.
Having watched Sudbury narrowly beat Shelford in the opening game, Southwold Colts with a travelling squad of 23 were keen to get into the action against reigning Eastern Counties Cup Champions and National Cup contenders Shelford.
Much of the first half was played inside the Wold 22 with possession to Shelford being soaked up by consistent defending from the Wold lads. Shelford had a game plan of kicking to the corners or chipping over the defence but the Wold back three were up to the task of keeping the door shut. However, Southwold also found it very difficult to get into the opposition half despite looking calm and organised in defence. The match was turning into a game of high stakes chess with both sides countering the others moves through to half time with the score still 0-0.
In the second half Wold gradually exerted more pressure on Shelford and it was our flying flanker Phoenix who after breaking two tackles then switched on the afterburners for a typically flamboyant touchdown. The try went unconverted for a 0-5 lead to Wold. Three minutes later and quick ball generated by strong drives from the Southwold forwards was moved wide allowing Elliot to show his devastating pace and extend the Wold lead to 0-10. The pressure was all on Shelford now with the final quarter ticking away and despite their strong efforts Southwold never looked like giving up their advantage. The referees whistle ended a well contested encounter with Southwold savouring the victory over strong opponents.
